Yes, the tournaments are coming

We are still making progress with the tournaments feature in RummyFight. It’s a complicated process since it’s a feature that affects lots of parts in the app. Not only are we implementing the tournaments themselves but also four different fight modes, trophys for the winners, updated profile dialogs, updated statistics page but also the possibility to look at other players tournament fights while they are being played. Why this, you ask? Well, we thought it could be fun to watch a final in a tournament even though not being in it yourself, etc.

So what’s the current status then?
Well, most of the new things are already in place. Now we are working on the interface to make it easy to use and fun to look at. Pinch zoom in the Schedule, activation of the “if there has been three Passes in a row, then a winner is selected anyway”, etc.

Also, some new rules are being implemented regarding acceptable melds and there are lots of small improvements of the translations.

But we are getting there. Take a look at the screen shot of a tournament schedule and be your own judge.Screen shot 2013-06-24 at 11.03.32

tournament style is a great idea!
however, if I may, I suggest the layout look like the NCAA tournament bracket. not really sure how you’ll do pairings/seedings (and I doubt there is a method that will please everyone). but I imagine they’ll be random or based on the current rankings system.

I did think a long and hard time on how I would display the schedule and I chose this style since it will be very easy to follow any player’s road to the finals. This was important to me because of a thing I haven’t told you about the tourmanents yet… which is that it will be possible to enter and LOOK at any fight in a tournament while it is played… even though you are not participating in it.

This means that it will be possible to have an audience during a final 😉
Of course you will not be able to see the tiles on the racks of any player but you will be able to see what happens on the board.

Also don’t forget that in RummyFight there can be 2-4 opponents in a fight, which means that in a Tournament with 4-player fights, there will be the winners from FOUR fights going into the next round and become paired in the next fight. Not always the winners from two fights, you know 😉

And regarding the seedings, etc. In this first version of Tournaments, all fights in the first round are simply paired at random. However your comment has made me think. Maybe I should add a seeding feature too at the last minute. I’ll have to think about it. There’s still some time to make simple changes.

    understood.
one more suggestion though, I’d imagine that many of the folks participating in the tourney will probably also have other non-tourney games going on as well, so if that users list of games appear on their device, perhaps the background color can be different so that it stands out (or perhaps the board can be a new/different layout as well).

I’m waay ahead of you 😉
You will easily be able to see if a fight is a tournament fight or a regular one in the Lobby. The tournament ones will be in a different color and also have a small trophy on them.
